It is extremely hard to focus on what you do have instead of what you don’t. Everyone struggles with it. For me, part of my #depression and #anxiety was because of this concept. Yes, I love and appreciate many things and people in my life, but I’ve always struggled with questions like “Why don’t I have ABC?” “Why do so and so have ABC and I don’t?” “What did I do wrong?” “Was/am I not good enough?” “Did I not try hard enough?” My perspective has shifted before #covid19 and now it’s just on a whole other level. Yes, these thoughts still pop up in my head from time to time, but I tend to shrug it off. If RIGHT NOW you have food, a safe home, a job paying you decent money, friends and family to video chat with, people who check in on you, coworkers who you get to talk about what we’re going through or you’re not struggling with massive debt. You have A LOT RIGHT NOW. I keep reading about #privilege and what it means. I used this photo because it shows the privilege I have of working with a team at my job who I know doesn’t care if I have my hair in a wrap and zero makeup. They won’t judge me or crack a joke or even bring up a racial stereotype (i.e. black women and their hair).....continued in comments below. “We are in this together,” has been an emotionally provoking statement for a lot of people as we are not all really in this together! Due to many socioeconomic factors we are definitely not experiencing this in the same way. And for those who live with mental illness, I can 110% tell you they are not experiencing this #globalpandemic in the same way as you. As someone who has been dealing with my own #mentalillness since 15 years old, I’ve learned a lot about what is helpful and what is extremely unhelpful when people are trying to support you! Let’s first focus on the positive though. There are many ways you can help someone #cope right now, ways you might not have thought about. I go through 17 things you can do and why they are helpful. So now I'm out of sexy professional photos 😂 so I thought I'd go the natural at home #selfie route! No makeup except lipstick. Bit of skin smoothing by my phone camera (apparently that's built in now) and I used the Ludwig @instagram filter but I mean otherwise it's natural! LOL This was Day 42 at my desk with the sun shining in. I've been working with certain professionals to help me with book marketing, distribution etc. And my brand consultant (@adesiredjourney, who is ridiculously smart and good at her job) was shocked when she realized "A Hidden Life" was inspired by my own mental illness(es). I kind of just laughed because I've heard this shock before and I've lived with this duality since I was 15. One of the things I hope to do with all this is to help change the representation of what #mentalillness looks like. A lot of us are stuck in this archaic, clinical, padded room, sea foam green etc. image, which I hate. I actually do mention this specific visualization in my book via commentary by the main character! I want people to see me so they know this is what #depression looks like. This is what #OCD looks like. This is what #anxiety looks like. We have an inevitable wave of mental illness headed our way and we don't have time for misconceptions and #stigma. We just don't. So everyone get on board asap.
